I am very pleased to welcome everyone to Hampton Iona Community Group’s new website. Hampton Iona is located in the Westboro area of Ottawa. Our boundaries are Richmond Road to the north, Carling Avenue to the South, Tweedsmuir Avenue to the East, and Island Park Drive to the West. All who live within our boundaries are members of our community group.

Key features of our neighbourhood include two idyllic parks, after which our association is named: Iona Park and Hampton Park. Iona Park includes a neighbourhood wading pool and our community skating rink, while Hampton Park is split between a heavily wooded section owned by the NCC and a City park which contains play structures, a wading pool and baseball diamonds. We have two major shopping centres in our community in Westgate Shopping Centre and Hampton Plaza. We also have a nascent shopping area along our portion of Richmond Road. There are several schools and daycares in our area, most notably, Hilson Public School. Our plan is to develop our site over the next few weeks to not only inform you of the activities of our community group but also to provide you with important links inside and outside of our community.

A key feature of our community is our community skating rinks. Our rinks opened in mid-January this year. We have a hockey rink (unboarded) and a smaller skating pad and oval for free skating. After many years, our long-time rink manager retired and we had to put together a completely new group of volunteers. We are very pleased that a number of volunteers came forward from mid-December onwards to help build our rink. We also have four paid attendants. The core volunteer group includes James Rossiter, Ken Hoffman, Rick Stelzer, Jason Thomson, Kristjan Wallner, Ted Manto, Donato DiPietrantonio, Jeff Bergin of Westgate Health and Fitness Club and Lorne Cutler. We would also like to thank the many others who came out on many cold nights to help prepare the snow base. If you have any questions about the rink, please contact Lorne Cutler who is acting as rink manager this year.

We are open seven days a week, with over 35 hours of supervision. Your rink attendants are Jeremy James, Francis Valenti, Dylan Johnston and Michael King; all from the neighbourhood. They are there to supervise the rink and help the skaters.

The skating rinks in Iona Park will continue to remain open as long as weather allows and the City doesn’t remove the temporary lighting.  The City of Ottawa has told us that we have done an awesome job on our ice this year.

There will be two upcoming events in February at our rink the weekend of February 21-22. On February 21, Hampton Iona Community Group will be participating in the City of Ottawa’s Hockey Day. The City is planning to have as many simultaneous hockey games with the ultimate goal of getting into the Guiness Book of Records for the most hockey games in one city at the same time. If you want to participate, the games will be taking place at 1:00. Please drop by and join a game.

On February 22 we will be holding our annual winter carnival. The carnival will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 followed by a community bonfire. There will be hockey contests, games for the children, a BBQ, the bonfire and other surprises. All are welcome. If you haven’t tried our ice yet, these are the ideal opportunities.
