Convent Garage Sale

The Soeurs de la Visitation Convent will be holding a moving sale on Saturday 29th May from 8am to 2pm in the chapel.

  1. Having resided a mere 2 blocks from the convent for the last 33 years, I have been following the proposed re-development of the site by Ashcroft with considerable dismay. The site is too full, too intensely filled with buildings far taller than we local residents could ever have imagined. And we used to think that Westboro was a nice place to live!
I can only hope that the heritage designation granted by the city will save some of the site from the ravages of Ashcroft’s design and over-intensification.
As an added point, if my children were enrolled in Hilson school or the daycare program, I would not want them in the shadow (or public view) of the multi-storied condo buildings Ashcroft has proposed. That area has always been a protected, private place – especially for the children in the daycare area. Thank Heavens my children are grown – but I do feel for the parents who will have to contend with the looming shadow of such drastic change.
As for Ashcroft’s letter in “The Ottawa Citizen” today, I cannot imagine where they construe all the “support” to be coming from in the community. Trust me – there is none there. I know my community.
I also feel that the City of Ottawa Planning and Growth Management Department has failed our neighborhood miserably – they’ve clearly misjudged the site, the project, and the impact that this will have on our neighborhood. Shame!
The only bright spots in all of this: Thanks to our councillor, Christine Leadman, Heritage Ottawa, active and articulate local residents, and our local over-worked community organizations for all of their efforts on our behalf.
