IONA PARK RINK UPDATE – IMPORTANT

It’s almost winter and in Hampton Iona that means that we will soon be gearing up to build and operate our neighbourhood skating rink in Iona Park.  Whether you’re looking for a pickup game of hockey or a place to teach your children how to skate, Iona Park is the place to be in the winter.

Volunteers – As always, we wouldn’t have a rink if it wasn’t for the dedication of a number of volunteers.   Each year, however, we lose a few volunteers and we need new people.

We use volunteers to help build the rink.   This mainly consists of flattening the snow to build a base (where we need as many people as possible to come out) and then flooding the rink.   Without volunteers we just can’t get our rink built.  The work to build the rink is typically from mid-December to early-January depending on the weather.   Once the rink is up and running, we normally use our paid attendants to maintain the rink but we still occasionally ask for volunteer help if there has been a particularly heavy snowfall or if warm weather requires numerous floodings in a short period of time.  Not only is volunteering to help with the rink a great way to give back to the community but it is also an excellent way to meet your neighbours.  If you are interested, please give us your name and contact details either through the website or directly to Lorne Cutler at lacutler@magma.ca.

Attendants – Once the rink is up and running we are required by the City to have between 30 and 35 hours of supervised skating time.  Each year we hire 2 to 4 paid attendants to share supervision duties.  Unfortunately this year, all of our previous attendants, who were students, have either moved on to other things or places and we are looking for 2 to 4 new attendants.  For each shift we have one attendant on duty so the number of people that we can hire will depend on their availability.    The shifts are typically 5 to 10 weekdays and noon to five on weekends.

If you are interested in working as rink attendant or know someone who would be or would like further information, please contact Lorne Cutler either directly at lacutler@magma.ca or through the website.    Usually in the past we have used high school or university/college students for these positions.    Attendant positions will require police checks.  As such,  the earlier we can get these positions filled, the faster we can get the checks finalized.   Please note, the attendants positions are paid.
